We’re all mourning the end of Game of Thrones. Regardless of how you feel about this final season, the show has been a huge part of the pop cultural digest for the last decade. It’s a big part of so many of our lives, and saying goodbye will be as bittersweet as the plot likely will be. The hole it will leave not just in our Sunday schedules, but also in our water cooler conversations and our social media feeds, will be astronomical. We’re not entirely sure that we’re ready for it to be over.
All that’s to say that watching this trailer for a documentary about the making of the final season of Game of Thrones is an emotional journey.
Where to begin? Maybe with Kit Harington crying at the final table read? Don’t do that to us, Kit! Not so early in the trailer, when he haven’t even prepared ourselves yet. The Last Watch will surely have tons of heart-wrenching moments like that. From the looks of it, the doc will follow different groups as they prepare to say goodbye to the show. Undoubtedly, it changed the fabric of their lives, even more monumentally than it’s changed our own. From the costume designers to the writers to the extras—one of whom gets a spotlight moment in this footage—Game of Thrones was a massive undertaking for all involved. It’s so exciting to see the recognition of the hard work of people not typically afforded the spotlight.
The Last Watch comes from director Jeanie Finlay, and is described on the HBO website as “a farewell to Westeros with the people who built the realm.”
The two-hour documentary will air at 9 p.m. on May 26 on HBO, the week after the series finale of Game of Thrones.
