Although Avengers: Infinity War is filled with some pretty dramatic elements and sky-high stakes, any movie that features the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy in it is going to have its share of hilarious moments. And Infinity War’s MVP in terms of laughs turned out to be none other than Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. In fact, Drax’s funniest line wasn’t even in the script at all; it was totally improvised.
In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Infinity War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus revealed that it was Bautista who actually came up with one of the movie’s funniest asides while they were shooting the film. “The script only said, ‘Where is Gamora?’ ‘I’ll do you even better: Who is Gamora?’” according to Christopher Markus. “And then during one take, Bautista adds the line ‘I’ll do you one better: Why is Gamora?’” Markus later told Bautista ‘OK, you’re very good at your job.’”
If you’ve seen Infinity War with a big crowd, you’ll know it was a genius decision to leave that line in, as it always gets a huge laugh from the audience. It’s a testament to the Russo Brothers and to Marvel itself that they allow as much improvisation as they do, considering the fact that yet another fan favorite moment (in a much different way) from the film— Spider-Man’s final words to Tony Stark after Thanos snaps his fingers—was also improvised.
