It’s that time again. Rising with the sun, the 2023 Oscar nominations are announced for all to discuss, dissect, and generally disagree over. But what we at Nerdist want to know most, and what we’re sure our readers are hoping to find out is, were any of our favorite nerdy movies of the year nominated for the high honors of Hollywood? Let’s find out. For those looking for the full list of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards, we’ll leave all 14 categories for you at the bottom.
Although Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was not nominated for Best Picture as some hoped it would be, the sequel to Black Panther did see some love in the 2023 Oscar nominations. Kicking off its honors, Angela Bassett rightfully received a nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her powerful work as Queen Ramonda, the unbreakable yet tender sovereign of Wakanda. This nominations marks Marvel Studios’ and the MCU’s first nomination in an acting category. Wakanda Forever also received a nomination for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Song, and Best Visual Effects, for a total of five nominations. We’re rooting for you, Rihanna.
Meanwhile, one of our favorite movies of the year, Everything Everywhere All At Once, received a total of eleven nominations, the highest number out of all the 2023 movies nominated. This includes for the highest honors of the 2023 Oscars, Best Picture, Best Director (Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert), and Best Lead Actress (Michelle Yeoh). We were delighted to also see Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan receive nominations.
Top Gun: Maverick also flew in to receive its accolades. The movie received six nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards, among them, Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, and Best Song. You go, Lady Gaga.
Among other nerdy nominations, we loved seeing a nod to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery with a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for the movie and Rian Johnson. Turning Red, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and The Sea Beast waved to us from Best Animated Feature Film. And The Batman even swooped in from the night to receive three nominations in 2023’s Oscars line-up.
While we feel glad to see this nerdy love, we were disappointed not to see any nominations for Jordan Peele’s Nope, which absolutely stunned us this year. While nerdy films receive more recognition these days, it’s still a fight for the horror genre to get its proper due.
Will any of our favorites take home the prize, though? Getting nominated for the Oscars is only another step, and in 2023, competition is fierce. We guess we’ll have to tune in on Sunday, March 12, when the 95th Academy Awards finally take place, to find out.
