Some adults find making new friends difficult. They’re not sure where to meet new people or how to talk to them, let alone how to build lasting bonds with strangers who might have back problems. But we have the perfect idea to help: introduce yourself to people after a screening of Friendship. It’s the upcoming A24 film starring I Think You Should Leave‘s Tim Robinson and Ant-Man‘s Paul Rudd. Anyone who watches the new trailer for Friendship and decides they need to see it is clearly someone worth becoming friends with.
But this first-look makes it clear that the only meaningful relationships that will happen because of this movie will take place off-screen. The people in the movie are heading towards a hilarious nightmare of a falling out.
If this trailer also gave your life new meaning, you and I should be buddies. This is probably because you almost certainly also love Tim Robinson’s show on Netflix. Friendship looks like an indie horror film crossed with one of his sketches. However, it actually comes from writer-director Andrew DeYoung (Shrill, Our Flag Means Death, PEN15). It also stars Kate Mara, Josh Segarra, Jack Dylan Grazer, Jon Glaser, and Connor O’Malley.
What’s actually going on here in this bizarre promo of yelling and sadness? Here’s the official synopsis from A24 to go along with that Friendship trailer:
Suburban dad Craig falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, as Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.
No exaggeration, I wouldn’t need to know anything about this movie beyond that one sentence and who stars in it to be lined up early on opening night. Which I will 100% be doing when it comes to theaters this May.
If you’ll also be there, come up and say hi. It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Or it could be the begging of a total nightmare. Either way, as this trailer makes clear, that should lead to a whole lot of fun.
