Unfortunately, we are probably not living in a simulation. This reality is our reality. Yeah, we know. However, it’s still fun to imagine what we’d do if we discovered we were actually trapped inside a digital world. How would we react? What would we try and change about our lives? And what would we wear? That last question might not seem as relevant, but it turns out it’s an important one for Ryan Reynolds’ character in Free Guy. His shirt choice is a big deal in his upcoming action-comedy film where he realizes he’s a background character in a video game full of chaos, explosions, and needless violence.
The latest trailer for the film shows that while the clothes do not make the man, they can help make him famous.
The newest promo for Free Guy, from director Shawn Levy, offers the first comprehensive look at the film’s plot. Reynolds’ Guy doesn’t just realize he’s a NPC (non-playable character) in a game called “Free City.” He falls in love with Jodie Comer’s Molotov Girl (her in-game avatar), which leads to him upending the entire digital realm. That makes “blue shirt” a star in the real world. But Guy’s awakening threatens the very existence of his own.
The game’s owner, played by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows), wants to shut it all down rather than let a character’s “great guy” routine stop players from killing and blowing things up with impunity.
Will Guy be able to save his very existence? We hope so. Especially because we’ll be taking notes just in case we do live in a simulation.
Free Guy also stars Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect). It’s scheduled to hit theaters later this year, on December 11.
