Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi Want Us to Forget GREEN LANTERN

It’s New York Comic Con, the biggest pop-culture convention in the world pretty much brings the con season to an end and with it plenty of big news. A surprise reveal today is the new sci-fi comedy from Shawn Levy, Free Guy, and though the film itself sounds great, we’re currently more interested in this hilarious “Meet the Cast” video that Fox unleashed on fans today at NYCC.

Directed by Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy, the intriguing film stars Ryan Reynolds (Guy), Jodie Comer (Millie/Molotov Girl), Lil Rel Howery (Buddy), Joe Keery (Keys) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Mouser). So, sorry Waititi fans but no word yet on who Taika will be playing yet. Free Guy centers on “the unconventional story of a lonely bank teller who discovers he is actually a background character in the brutal open-world videogame Free City.” This plot line might sound slightly familiar to anyone who watched the super-weird fishing noir flick Serenity, but seems to center on a Grand Theft Auto-style game rather than an extreme fishing one. Though little more is known about the film right now, this is a killer cast so we cannot wait to see what unfolds.

That interesting twist is all well and good, but honestly, we’re just obsessed with this hilarious bit that sees Comer and Keery disbelievingly try to remind Waititi and Reynolds about their previous collaboration on the despised DC Comics turkey, Green Lantern. It helps that the pair are two of the most charming actors working at the moment so they sell the gag incredibly well and it’s a smart move as they can basically just recycle this joke until the film is released next year without ever worrying about spoiling the details of the high concept sci-fi flick.

Free Guy will hit screens in July 2020.
