There was an unfortunate shed fire at Turtle World of Medina in Medina, Ohio, recently, where several turtles died on the spot. Several other turtles, however, managed to survive thanks to a heroic team of firefighters. They not only snatched the turtles from certain death, but also administered to them oxygen; from tiny, ridiculously cute oxygen masks.

Laughing Squid reported on the event, which occurred in late February. The Medina Fire Department reported on Facebook that Turtle World’s neighbors were the first to notice fire coming from the shed. After arriving on the scene, the firefighters put out the blaze and began removing turtles.
In all, the crew was able to remove approximately ten turtles from the smoke-filled shed. It then deployed the little oxygen masks—specifically designed for animal use—and was able to save half of the adorable reptiles. (Turtle World noted on Instagram that it lost seven tortoises in the fire, but was able to save five of six of the aquatic turtles near the blaze.)

The Medina Fire Department reassured the public in its Facebook post that Turtle World is safe, noting this fire was accidental. The Department’s best guess is that one of the heating elements in the shed is somehow responsible. Although it seems the firefighters have yet to determine the root cause of the incident.
Turtle World owner, Ron Blue, said on Instagram people shouldn’t consider this event a tragedy despite the loss of life. He added that he and his partner “have family, friends and colleagues who are battling much bigger health and emotional issues than what [they] experienced today.” Which sounds like a fantastic, almost zen-like outlook. And, in these very trying times, a breath of fresh air we could all use.
