Does Homelander Die in THE BOYS Series Finale?

One of the most hateful characters in TV history (and of the best performances by an actor) is Antony Starr as Homelander. For seven years and five seasons of The Boys, we’ve seen him get more and more powerful and get away with literal murder episode after episode. No character since Joffrey in Game of Thrones has deserved a painful on-screen death. So, did the series finale of The Boys deliver on that horrible Homelander death? Yes, Homelander did indeed die. And it sure wasn’t pretty. But no character has ever had it coming more than the leader of the Seven. Let’s break down Homelander’s ultimate ending and how he met his death on The Boys series finale.

How Are The Boys Able to Kill Homelander?

In The Boys series finale, “Blood and Bone,” Homelander has convinced himself that he’s the Second Coming, a literal God on Earth. And now that he’s taken the V1 formula, he’s effectively immortal. He decided to declare himself as God to the masses via a live broadcast from the Oval Office in the White House. To all unbelievers, he plans to deliver a swift death. As the most powerful being on Earth, in Homelander’s mind, no one can stop him from ascending to Godhood. But Billy Butcher and The Boys are going to try anyway.

Thanks to Frenchie’s experiments, Kimiko now has the power to blast radiation that removes the superpowers of anyone in the vicinity. Yes, including Homelander, and that marks the first step toward death for the Supe on The Boys. After help from Ashley Barrett, Kimiko and The Boys are able to sneak into the White House. There, they disrupt Homelander’s nationwide broadcast. A major battle ensues, and Homelander’s son Ryan joins the fight. Once Kimiko unleashes the blast, everyone in the room, including Ryan, Butcher, and Homelander, loses their superpowers. That’s when Billy Butcher gets his final revenge on Homelander at long last.

Homelander Meets His Death on The Boys Season Finale

Once Homelander tries to fly away and realizes he can’t, Butcher begins to wail on him in The Boys series finale. He beats the crap out of him, all while Homelander begs for mercy and utterly humiliates himself on camera. Butcher then takes a crowbar and rams it through Homelander’s skull, ending him once and for all. In front of the whole planet, Butcher defeats Homelander and kills him. But not until after everyone sees what a pathetic coward he truly is. Even though Homelander dies in a fairly brutal way on The Boys, considering all the damage he’s done, no end was bad enough for him. We’re sure there’s a special place in Hell for Homelander right about now—death is not enough for this The Boys character.

What Happens in The Boys After Homelander Dies?

With Homelander gone, the world seems to slowly return to normal on The Boys. We are not sure what the public stance on Supes is now that Homelander stands exposed, but Vought still exists. And they control the public narrative. They can choose to paint Homelander as one bad apple, but we have a feeling that many people will realize his true nature after this. Although this marked the death of Homelander in glorious fashion, we’re very curious as to what the world of The Boys looks like without his presence. Even though it’s a prequel series, we could learn more about a post-Homelander world in the upcoming series, Vought Rising. There certainly feels like there’s a lot of story to explore after Homelander dies.

All five seasons of The Boys are now streaming on Prime Video.
