The Maid of Might’s first DCU solo film is fast approaching, as Supergirl officially arrives in theaters this summer. And although we know much about the film, as it drew direct inspiration from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics, DC Studios added some new elements to the story. One of them is more prominent flashbacks to Kara’s childhood on Argo City, a section of the planet Krypton that survived its destruction (for a time). Because of these flashbacks, we get screentime for Kara’s parents, Zor-El (Superman’s uncle), and his wife, Allura In-Zee. Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our first look at actor David Krumholtz in his role as the father of Kara (Milly Alcock).
Of Krumholtz’s addition, Supergirl director Craig Gillespie said, “I was thrilled. He’s a big comic book fan, which was awesome.” Gillespie revealed something else interesting about Zor-El in the film, as it seems he’ll be speaking in the Kryptonian language in his scenes. “There are five languages in this film, and Kryptonian is one of them — all original languages,” Gillespie said. “So they had to learn a language. There are some major scenes, like minutes and minutes of dialogue that they’ve got to work with. You really need actors of that caliber.” In James Gunn’s Superman, Bradley Cooper also spoke in Kryptonian while in hologram form.

It seems Supergirl will use the Argo City flashback scenes to fully explain Kara’s character motivations in the present. Gillespie says the scenes of Kara’s family are “Trying to build on what her status was on Krypton, her father being a scientist and in academia, and the connections that they had there, which made it interesting in terms of how opulent that world was.” Like Jor-El, his brother Zor became one of the few Kryptonians who believed the world would soon die. And thus, he took precautions. But those precautions only temporarily saved a small portion of the planet. One thing we do wonder about is whether Zor-El also believed his child should conquer the Earth. We can’t help but wonder if Supergirl will address this change in Kryptonian values or not. We’ll find out when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26.
