The world is already enough like a Black Mirror episode. That means we might not be getting a new season anytime soon. In a recent interview with Radio Times, creator of the popular dystopian anthology series Charlie Brooker was unsure if a new season will happen. “I’ve been busy, doing things. I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing. At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
The Emmy-winning series has often showcased nightmare-ish scenarios for its characters. That feels all too real given the current world pandemic. We last had new Black Mirror episodes in June 2019, with only a short season featuring stars such as Anthony Mackie, Andrew Scott, Topher Grace, and Miley Cyrus. Black Mirror also introduced a new storytelling format on Netflix when it released “ Bandersnatch” in 2018, an interactive Black Mirror film starring Fionn Whitehead and Will Poulter. This was Netflix’s first foray into the “choose your own adventure” format. Audiences had a very hands-on approach to watching.

Black Mirror debuted in 2011 and has continued to frighten and delight audiences. Brooker’s twisted imagination often feels all too real. The science fiction show captures the plights of modern technology in troubling ways; it’s brought audiences back again and again. But now, with the world in the state that it’s in, it seems Brooker wants to go back to his comedic skill set. We can’t blame him.
So, while humanity might need a reprieve from the darkness that is Black Mirror, that doesn’t mean we won’t get more of Brooker. BBC Two recently confirmed Brooker is returning to UK screens with an Antiviral Wipe special on Thursday, May 14.
