For a while now, fans have had many questions about whether Henry Cavill would ever don his red cape again and return as the DCEU’s Superman. We last saw Cavill in the role when he was part of 2017’s Justice League movie. Since then, there’s been only uncertainty when it comes to Cavill’s position as Superman. But now, Cavill is back. The actor returned to the blue and red suit for Black Adam. Though rumored and outright spoiled many days ago, the movie has now arrived and confirms the news: Superman is back in the DCEU. Here’s what happened with Henry Cavill’s Superman in Black Adam‘s post-credits scene.
The scene begins with Black Adam in his new base of operations in Kahndaq. Late at night, a drone flies in and when Adam comes to meet it, a hologram of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) projects out. She tells him if he doesn’t want to stay in her prison (he escaped earlier in the film), that’s fine. He just can’t leave Kahndaq. That’s his new prison. This, as you might expect, doesn’t sit very well with Black Adam. He says no one on this planet can stop him, to which Waller replies she knows people who aren’t from this planet.
Adam then destroys the drone with a quick lightning bolt and out of the smoke walks none other than Superman (Cavill). He says it’s been a long time since “they” (presumably Waller and the intelligence community) were so afraid of someone. He then says “Black Adam…we should talk.” The Superman-filled Black Adam post-credit scene ends with a slight smirk on Adam’s face.
We hasten to add, this is Superman’s one and only appearance in person in Black Adam. (Superman technically appears on comic books, posters, and other memorabilia.) Superman and Black Adam do not fight in the film.
For a while, it seemed like Cavill would have to hang up his tights. Even though Cavill himself expressed interest in reprising the role of Superman. In 2020, he noted to Variety, “Because it’s such a wonderful character, it’s actually a responsibility I’m happy to have, and I hope that I get to play more of Superman in years to come.” But despite these hopes, rumors seemed to indicate that Cavill might be replaced as Clark Kent.
The DCEU has had a tougher time getting its universe together than the MCU has. But recent movies seem to suggest a better stride. And fans continue to feel hopeful about the future of the world. Cavill, too, has had recent success, especially in his role as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher series. Perhaps another Cavill Superman outing is just what the DCEU needs. Although past outings may have been dicey, there’s no time like the present to hit a home run.
And, of course, it’s common knowledge that Henry Cavill is a giant nerd. So, on the strength of that alone, we’re glad that he gets to step back into the world of heroes and to continue to live out his vision of Superman. For now, we’re pleased Cavill’s Superman graced us in Black Adam‘s post-credits scene. And we can’t wait to see how this next adventure unrolls or where we’ll see Superman next.
Cavill shared a note expressing happiness at returning to the role of Superman in an Instagram video:
