Documentary MASSIVE EFFECT Will Tell BioWare’s Full Story

EA just finished burying BioWare, and we’re all freshly mourning over the company’s grave. Many of us are asking, “How the hell did this happen?” While the easy answer “because EA” is always up for grabs, there’s much more to the story. Much more to BioWare’s story, from a titanic rise to a stuttering, heartbreaking fall. As it turns out, Fennessey Films (Singhs in the Ring, Over a Barrel) and Score G Productions (Inmate #1, The Culture High) are coming together to create a feature documentary chronicling BioWare. From its humble beginnings in the mid-90s, to its painful final days in 2026. And every game in between, from Shattered Steel to Dragon Age: The Veil Guard.

Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will go through each chapter of BioWare’s history, starting at the very beginning. BioWare originally formed in 1995 by three Canadian MDs—Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. The documentary chronicles their growth from a small project formed by three friends, to a dominating studio with a hefty legacy and over 100,000,000 copies of their various RPGs sold. But, with the good comes the bad. Massive Effect will also cover BioWare’s EA era, from the initial acquisition to the very end, with filming covering the last two years of BioWare’s journey.

“BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about the stories brought to life by the amazing people on our dev teams, and the fans who defended those worlds, championed them and carried them forward. We’re proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again.” —Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, BioWare Co-Founders

Directed and written by Akash Sherman (Clara), the documentary was commissioned by Canada’s Super Channel, and is set to premiere at film festivals sometime in 2027. Sherman said in a statement to Deadline that, “The BioWare founders are my hometown heroes. It’s a privilege and responsibility to share the journey of underdogs who came together to create deeply beloved storytelling. Their golden era kindled a spark in me and in an entire generation. With the studio’s recent closure, the film is now a profound valediction.”

It’s hard to find balm for the sting of losing a studio like BioWare, but a film like Massive Effect is sure to give credit to all of the BioWare employees who made the games we’ve all loved for so long, and that’s something. Money is fleeting. Art is eternal. Maybe that spark Akash Sherman was talking about can be lit in a new generation, even with BioWare gone. Like BioWare’s founders said themselves: the story never really ends.
