The world is dealing with a highly contagious, highly dangerous novel coronavirus that attacks the respiratory system. Yet some adults are refusing to wear masks, despite both overwhelming evidence and common sense telling them to. But if some won’t listen to scientists, maybe they’ll listen to The Science Guy, Bill Nye. Using different types of masks (and a candle), he showed how effective face coverings are in stopping the spread of COVID-19.
These videos are simple enough for people of any age to understand, and they convey an important message: wearing a mask is literally a matter of life and death.

Nye posted two videos on his official TikTok page. They physically show the simple reason why the scientific community wants you to wear a mask in public. Face coverings prevent particles from your respiratory system from getting in the air and entering others’ respiratory systems. Masks block the movement of air, making it harder for you to spread germs of any kind, including deadly COVID-19 particles.
A nice scarf looks good, but it isn’t as effective as a homemade face mask, which is not as effective as an N95 mask. They are built to stop the movement of air. Their effectiveness can be seen by Nye’s inability to get the candle flame to move even a little bit, the way it did with the homemade mask. (Granted, there is an ongoing shortage of N95 masks, and those should primarily be left for use by medical professionals.)

Wearing a mask protects everyone you come in contact with. And that protects everyone they come in contact with. The same way everyones’ masks protect you. If we all wear them we can save a lot of lives and slow the spread of COVID-19.
Some intrepid video editor, FlamingSacksOfPizza, has even done a version of Bill’s videos that looks exactly like his old Bill Nye the Science Guy episodes. And it’s truly perfect.
If you know someone who won’t listen to scientists, send them The Science Guy’s videos. He always knows how to explain things in a way even kids understand.
