A Quiet Place was one of the surprise hits of 2018. Few predicted its level of success, with both audiences and critics, alike. We’re not sure the movie’s co-writer and director John Krasinski was prepared for how much everyone would love his sci-fi horror film, either. If he did, he might not have killed off his own character, giving him the opportunity to star in a potential sequel. But that didn’t stop him and Paramount from going ahead with one anyway. A followup comes to theaters next March, and now we have the first footage from the film. It’s brief, but it shows where the story is going next. The Abbott family is leaving behind the safety of their home in A Quiet Place Part II. And they’re going to find some new terrors when they do.
Teasers for full trailers are often nothingburgers, but this is the rare case where it’s actually pretty good. It’s tense, and it reveals more than you might think. It reintroduces the remaining Abbott clan as they reach the end of a noise-cancelling sand path. Those silent walkways made it possible for them to safely get around in the first film. In the world of A Quiet Place, stepping on a few crunchy fallen leaves is akin to yelling out to those terrible monsters.
This promo doesn’t get into why mother Abbott would take such a risk, though. The fact she would continue past that path without taking the time to lay down more sand indicates she doesn’t have much of a choice. This is clearly a risk she and her kids must take immediately. The movie’s official synopsis also hints at their urgency, along with a new “threat” that they must face.
“Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.”

One of the reasons the original film worked is that it made an alien invasion intimate. The entire world had been destroyed by those monsters, but we only experienced the fallout via one family who lived in the woods. A Quiet Place Part II will leave that behind to explore what happened to the rest of society.
Will it change the dynamic of the story? Yes, and that’s a good thing. The first movie didn’t necessarily scream out for a sequel. It felt like a fully contained story that ended on a hopeful note. The Abbotts learned how to defeat those horrible creatures. Journeying out into a much bigger world opens up all sorts of new possibilities.
As do these mysterious new threats. Are these other monsters? Do they use a different sense to hunt their prey? We don’t know. We might find out when the full trailer gets released on New Year’s Day. But if we have to wait until we see the movie that’s fine too. This time we predict big things for A Quiet Place.
A Quiet Place Part II is written and directed by John Krasinski. It also stars Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou, and comes to theaters in March 2020.
