Before Moon Knight‘s release, many rumors swirled around which MCU characters might make an appearance in the series. But it turns out Moon Knight is the first Disney+ MCU show not to feature any already introduced characters from the wider universe. Aside from one allusion to Madripoor, Moon Knight actually didn’t have any strong connections to the rest of the MCU. And while we always love speculating about seeing our favorite heroes interact with new characters, we did enjoy that Moon Knight gave Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Layla El-Faouly, and all the rest the space to establish themselves. But that doesn’t mean MCU character cameos for the show went undiscussed. In fact, Marvel’s Eternals almost appeared on Moon Knight.
Interestingly, although Moon Knight‘s Steven Grant lives around the corner from Eternals‘ Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington), who, we might mention, also works for a British museum, this was not the planned Moon Knight meets Eternals cameo. Although Moon Knight briefly considered his inclusion, this thought process didn’t go very far. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Moon Knight‘s head writer Jeremy Slater reveals, “We talked about Dane Whitman a little bit just because he works in a history museum and that could be a natural interaction. My feeling was if we got Kit Harington to show up and he doesn’t suit up and he doesn’t kick ass, as a fan I’m pissed off.”
But another Eternals and Moon Knight meeting was almost in the cards.
Moon Knight Almost Met Eternals
Speaking to The Direct, Slater shared more about the MCU connection that got much closer to happening. He shares:
I tried very hard to get the Eternals into the show, just because I’m buddies with Kumail Nanjiani… I want[ed] some Kingo. At one point, there was a flashback on the page that sort of showed one of Khonshu’s Avatars back in ancient Egypt, sort of dealing with Ammit being locked away, and Alexander the Great, and all of that stuff. You sort of saw this Avatar team-up with the Eternals. It was a really fun scene, but again, it was so massively expensive to recreate Ancient Egypt, to sort of bring in 3 or 4 of the Eternals to have this big action sequence.It was one of those things where it was a very fun scene, and it would have been a great cold open to one of the episodes, but it also would have had to come out of our budget somewhere else, and probably would have hurt our finale along the way. So, that was the cameo I had to cut. It hurt, but it was also the right thing to do for the show, and I think everyone sort of collectively agreed. There’s plenty of time in the future to team this guy up with other characters in the MCU and start building these connections; let’s not force something just because the other shows have all had it.
Truthfully, we would love to have met Alexander the Great on Moon Knight. Seeing his tomb and hearing about his teased connection with Ammit was a great Easter egg for the history buffs among us. And, of course, bringing in the Eternals and showing us a Moon Knight of old does sound like a tremendous amount of fun. Not to mention, getting to see Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo again would have been a treat, especially if he brought with him other Eternals like Thena, Ikaris, Gilgamesh, Makkari and more. Since the Eternals are based on gods of mythology and Moon Knight is all about its ancient Egyptian gods, this crossover would have made a lot of sense.
Which Other MCU Connection Almost Happened In Moon Knight?
Ultimately, we agree the Eternals cameo probably wasn’t necessary to the plot of Moon Knight. And we guess even Marvel Studios can’t go on very expensive larks for no reason. Letting Moon Knight stand alone without connections to other MCU shows or movies feels right, looking at the fully-aired show.
All this said, Moon Knight‘s Director Mohamed Diab recently told Variety, “I want to tell you the very first scene, there was a crossover, and the very end scene, there was a crossover.” But both these MCU cameos ultimately failed to make it into Moon Knight. But now we know the Eternals cameo would have opened a Moon Knight episode. So we can’t help but wonder what the end scene crossover may have been. Could this missing piece have defined Moon Knight‘s future? We guess we may never know.
