Ava DuVernay can pretty much do it all. Her filmmaking credits range from impactful depictions of real-life events with Selma to bringing childhood stories to life with A Wrinkle in Time. The prolific and Emmy Award-winning director and producer will continue in the latter direction with Wings of Fire. The animated series, based off the book series of the same name, will hit Netflix with a family-friendly saga. DuVernay will serve as an executive producer for Wings of Fire.

Writer Tui T. Sutherland’s book series follows young dragons who set out to fulfill prophecies. The series will follow a similar storyline, focusing of five specific dragons on different missions. Here’s the complete synopsis:
A bitter war has raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic world of Pyrrhia. According to prophecy, five young dragons will rise to end the bloodshed and bring peace back to the land. Raised and trained in secret from the time they were hatched, the Dragonets of destiny—Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny—embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of this savage war they are destined to bring to an end.
Wings of Fire’s launch date isn’t clear yet but it will have 10 40-minute episodes. There are a few books in the series so it wouldn’t be shocking if the show run for multiple seasons. And, there’s apparently a ton of fans with millions of books sold around the world. Dan Milano (Glitch Techs) and Christa Starr (Mystery Science Theater 3000) are responsible for adapting the series for TV and will serve as its showrunners alongside Justin Ridge (Star Wars Resistance).

Ava DuVernay is understandably excited about partnering with Netflix again for her first animated project. “Within this epic book series from the mind of Tui Sutherland is an elegant saga filled with wisdom and wonder, exploring ideas of belonging and bias, camaraderie and community,” said DuVernay in a press release. “On behalf of my colleagues Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes of ARRAY Filmworks, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix and Warner Bros. Animation for this dynamic adaptation where five young dragonets fulfill their destiny and show viewers how to fulfill their own.”
Hopefully, this fantasy adventure will soar to great heights.
