Netflix Releasing a New Original Movie Every Week in 2021

2020 was the year none of us could go to a movie theater, and 2021 might be the year none of us have to. Netflix has announced it will be debuting a new original movie every week, with a slate of films that feature some of the biggest names in the business. That includes big budget blockbusters starring Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Regina King, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and a whole lot more. They’ll also be joined by some of the most renowned filmmakers in the world.

And with a wide range of genres, there will be something for everyone looking to stay on their couch.

Netflix is loading up on even more original movies—both domestic and international—to help keep its standing atop the streaming service mountain. The site announced the new slate in a video that features many of Hollywood’s biggest stars sharing what they love about movies and why the signed on to their project.

The collection of on-screen stars is staggering by itself. It also includes Chris Hemsworth, Sandra Bullock, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, Zendaya, Amy Poehler, Jennifer Garner, Dave Bautista, Amy Adams, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Hudson, Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington, Melissa McCarthy, and Octavia Spencer.

But Netflix also invested heavily behind the camera for its big push. The streaming service hired plenty of famous directors. That list includes Zack Snyder, Nora Fingscheidt, Joe Wright, Antoine Fuqua, Shawn Levy, Robert Pulcini, Shari Springer Berman, Jane Campion, Paolo Sorrentino, and Adam McKay. Halle Berry and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debuts will also premiere on Netflix in 2021.

And the types of movies is just as long and varied—from horror and action, to zombies and cowboys, to both high school romances and terror. Subscribers of all ages and tastes will have plenty of options to choose from. (However, only a few have release dates already.) You can find the full list, categorized by genre, below.

What you won’t find though is a concessions stand. You might not have to go to the movie theater this year. But that means you will need to make your own popcorn.
