One of the things that we’re missing most during this weird time is going to see a movie in the theater with friends. The scent of popcorn floating on the air, the excitement of watching a spectacular feature on a big screen. Though we can’t actually go to the movies right now, Funimation and BigScreen have come together to deliver a series of amazing anime movies that you can watch on your VR head set in a virtual movie theater. And guess what? You can even bring some buds along!
Kicking off with the highest-grossing anime film of all time, the sci-fi love story Your Name, the series will feature over 30 awesome selections including My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, Akira, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. BigScreen and Funimation are presenting these films in a virtual movie theater, where you can meet friends in the lobby and pick up some digital snacks before heading in and choosing your seats. As the video above shows, you each have a cute avatar that represents you and you can chat and communicate with your friends whilst you watch.

We can’t get over what a great idea this is in general, but especially as we all shelter in place due to the COVID-19 crisis. Your Name will be screening May 1-3 and you can join in by getting downloading Bigscreen which is currently compatible with Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift S, Oculus Go, Valve Index and HTC VIVE, as well as SteamVR and Windows Mixed Reality Headsets. Playstation VR compatibility will be added later this year.
The price varies per screening with classic catalog films costing $3.99, recent anime releases be $5.99, and brand new films will cost viewers $14.99. Check out the rest of the listings here!
