So Now That It’s Here, What Else is Coming to Disney+ ?

After months of anticipation, excitement, and a good 24 hours of user confusion Disney+ has arrived. The massive streaming service is stacked to the brim with nostalgic classics, MCU movies, the entire CANON Star Wars back catalog, and a whole bunch of original programming too. But there is still more to come. Disney has announced even more shows hitting the service at some time in the future. We’re putting together a comprehensive list of what’s to come, updated and refreshed each time we hear of something new.

Disney+

For the moment the biggest news are the currently in the works Marvel TV shows that will extend the world of the MCU onto the small screen. Hopefully, it’ll be more successful crossover than previous attempts like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the now-defunct Marvel Netflix shows. Recently Kevin Feige stated to Bloomberg that the shows will be a must-watch for continuity concerned fans.

“If you want to understand everything in future Marvel movies, he says, you’ll probably need a Disney+ subscription, because events from the new shows will factor into forthcoming films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Scarlet Witch will be a key character in that movie, and Feige points out that the Loki series will tie in, too. ‘I’m not sure we’ve actually acknowledged that before.'”

Star Wars Shows Coming to Disney+
Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars

We know that there are currently multiple Star Wars series in production for Disney+ which is unsurprising after Bob Iger hinted–in a recent interview with BBC Radio–that the Mouse House would be slowing down their output of Star Wars movies in the next few years post The Rise of Skywalker.

“I have said publicly that I think we made and released too many Star Wars films over a short period of time. I have not said that they were disappointed in any way. I’ve not said that I’m disappointed in their performance. I just think that there’s something so special about a Star Wars film, and less is more.” Iger shared.

With that in mind, we still only know about one of the new shows for sure which is the long-gestating Obi-Wan project with Ewan McGregor reprising his role as the iconic Jedi first brought to life by Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy. Little is known about the series yet but McGregor did hint at the timeline and placement of the film in an interview with Men’s Journal.

“The storyline sits between Episode III and Episode IV… the Jedi Order was falling apart. It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him—Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over.”

  • Obi-Wan (No release date)
  • Mandalorian Season Two (No release date)
  • Three unannounced Star Wars projects (No release date)

So far the only other thing Disney has announced is Marvel’s 616; this will be an anthology series focusing on the people behind the Marvel movies. It’ll also show how the films themselves intersect with and reflect the real world. The first episode of the series will Community’s Gillian Jacobs directing.  According to Marvel, that will be focused on the women in the company.

“the perspective of what it means to be a woman in what’s perceived to be a male-driven industry.” Inspired by the tagline of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, the episode — “Higher, Further, Faster” — shines a light “on the trailblazing women of Marvel Comics and explores how they found ways to tell stories of representation and inclusion.”
