Oh what a day! What a lovely day! Ever since Mad Max: Fury Road, one of the best movies of the century, roared into theater in May of 2015, audiences have wanted to know one thing: when will we get a sequel? Since then, there have been countless reports and rumors that there would be multiple sequels… and other rumors that there would be none at all. Well, hope rides eternal on a shiny and chrome war rig, because director George Miller says he still has plans for two more Mad Max movies, including a story about Furiosa.
In an interview with IndieWire, Miller was asked if there are two Fury Road sequels in the works, and while his answer still leaves a teeny bit more ambiguity than we’d like, the most important thing is that the foundation for them already exist, along with the plan to make them.
“There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the [Warner Bros.] thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen.”
Considering how things can work in Hollywood, that doesn’t exactly guarantee either sequel, let alone both, will happen. And even if they do we could still be a long way from seeing them. However, his desire to make them, and the existence of two stories, is most important. As is the fact he also said legal issues with Warner Bros. over the franchise that have been an impediment to any sequels have “stabilized” and “become extremely positive” since the merger with AT&T. Considering Fury Road was both a box office success with audience as well as a critical darling, like he said it would seem “pretty clear” they are likely to happen.
And for everyone who loves the movie and the franchise, this news is perfect. Perfect in every way.
