Take a Look at the Making of DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE

We’ve been eagerly awaiting Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance panel ever since they announced they were coming to Comic-Con this year. Recent cast announcements, a Nintendo game, and an initial trailer are making us pretty excited about returning to this fantastical universe. Lucky for us, not only did we gain new insight into the upcoming show, but how it was made as well.

During the Hall H panel, Netflix premiered a sneak peek clip of The Making of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The two minute video provides us with great behind-the-scenes looks and insights into the making of the show. Artists from the original film discuss the intricate, handcrafted details that go into the set pieces and characters that are shown on screen. Executive producer Lisa Henson highlights how important the craftsmanship is to the look and feel of the Dark Crystal universe.

Gavin Bocquet, the production designer, stresses how important it is to capture the feel of the original film while also pushing it forward. You can tell that the creative team behind Age of Resistance is dedicated to keeping most of the work practical, like in the original. This clip does show how new technology, like green screens, can really elevate the puppets’ performances.

Director Louis Leterrier remarks that they want audiences to forget they’re watching puppets act. Even in this clip, where we can see some of the performers, the puppets still feel very real and convincing. We’re also incredibly impressed with the sheer scope of Age of Resistance, and can’t wait to learn about the show’s places, battles, and creatures. Even with new technology, Age of Resistance still feels deeply rooted in Henson’s unique vision.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will drop August 30, 2019 on Netflix. While you wait, you might want to refresh yourself on the history of The Dark Crystal world.
