AVENGERS: ENDGAME Topped a THE FORCE AWAKENS Box Office Record

“Part of the journey is the end,” and the start of that end has been very lucrative for Marvel. Avengers: Endgame had a record-setting “preview” night.

We knew Avengers: Endgame was going to have a monster opening weekend at the box office when pre-sale tickets sales were so crazy some very optimistic people had theirs on the market for thousands of dollars (yes, thousands). When Monday morning rolls around on a grateful universe, there’s an excellent chance the follow-up to last year’s gigantic worldwide phenomenon Infinity War will claim the greatest opening weekend in movie history. It’s already on pace, after it set the all-time preview night record, taking the title from the galaxy far, far away.

Box Office Mojo reports Avengers: Endgame took in a whopping $60 million in domestic ticket sales for its preview night (the Thursday before the official Friday opening), topping the previous holder, 2015’s The Force Awakens, which took in $57 million. (Though adjusted for inflation they are essentially the same.) All it took was selling out over 8,000 showings, which somehow sounds even more impressive.

With Endgame expanding to even more screens, it’s almost certain its next record will be for the best opening weekend ever, which was set by Infinity War at nearly $258 million. And its worldwide box office is already at $305 million, so we can start thinking about whether it will eventually top Avatar’s all-time box office sales record of $2.78 billion.

Part of the journey is the end, but a much bigger part is all the money Disney will be hauling in from Avengers: Endgame.

Below, enjoy a video featuring a spoiler-free roundup of Endgame reviews. If you’ve already seen the movie, we’ve got a take on its final scene and some thoughts on what its pop culture references say about its plot.
