This Synth Cover of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” Is a Halloween Treat (Premiere)

Scandroid, the synthwave project of Detroit producer Klayton, is quickly becoming a go-to resource for synth-driven and seasonally appropriate covers: His rendition of Star Wars‘ “The Force Theme” was perfect for May The Fourth, and now he’s getting ready for Halloween with an electric cover of Michael Jackson’s spooky classic “Thriller.” The track premieres today exclusively on Nerdist, and while Jackson’s original doesn’t need any improving, the bombastic synths and punchy percussion make it feel like you’re driving through the set of Miami Vice at 200 miles per hour.

The song comes from Scandroid’s upcoming album Monochrome, which also includes the aforementioned Star Wars cover and a bonus remix of “Thriller” by synthwave producer PYLOT. Klayton says that once he decided to put a Halloween-themed track on the album, he knew instantly that “Thriller” was the one:

“I knew when I started the album (Monochrome) that I wanted to do a Halloween-related track. It only took me 1/4 of a second to conclude this would be my perfect chance to cover a track I loved during the 80s. I probably watched the ‘Thriller’ music video 100+ times on my parents VCR after I recorded it from MTV.”

Monochrome comes out on October 27 and is available for pre-order now. Watch the video for “Thriller” above, listen to the track on Spotify, and check out the album tracklist below.
