“Sweet buttery Moses.”
Those were the first words in our very own Dan Casey’s Sundance Film Festival review about the upcoming Nicolas Cage horror film Mandy, which he described as “one of the most audacious and exhilarating cinematic experiences” he’d ever had. That’s high praise for a film starring our favorite mad genius actor with a proclivity for starring in totally insane movies. But just how much more nuts could this turn out to be than the actor’s typical offering? Based on the first mind-bending, dark, demonic, ultra-violent trailer, it might very well be the most twisted Nic Cage film ever.
“Pacific Northwest. 1983 AD. Outsiders Red Miller and Mandy Bloom lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand, Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.”
Oh yeeeeah, that’s the stuff—monsters, drugs, a secret sex cult, weird hill people, “crazy evil,” the world’s longest chainsaw, a bizarre love story, and a bloodied Nic Cage wielding a magical axe on a vengeful rescue mission. It’s like Nicolas Cage’s IMDb page came to life, did a whole bunch of LSD, and made the world’s craziest movie.
But don’t expect to enjoy this ironically, because early reviews say Cage is genuinely awesome in the movie. Truth be told, it feels like he’s been preparing for this exact film his entire career. Sweet buttery Moses indeed.
Mandy, directed by Panos Cosmatos, also stars Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Ned Dennehy, Olwen Fouéré. It slashes its way into theaters this fall on September 14th.
