Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald apparates into theaters this fall, but first the cast took a Portkey to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the film and to drop a new trailer that gives us a look at what Dumbledore was really like as a professor—and more importantly, why he refused to face off against his former friend Grindelwald.
At Warner Bros.’ Hall H panel, host Aisha Tyler welcomed Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Zoe Kravitz, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Claudia Kim, and Dan Fogler to the stage. Notably absent from the cast at first was Johnny Depp, whose Dark Wizard Grindelwald is all over the new trailer. But Depp, who Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling have defended despite allegations of domestic violence, made a surprise appearance in character later in the panel. Warner Bros. might be regretting bringing him to the stage after many in attendance booed him when he walked out.
This trailer gives us a much better idea of what to expect from the film, notably Dumbledore’s refusal to actually face Grindelwald himself, which is why he recruits Newt Scamander to lead the charge. That is a danger that is growing larger every day, and that’s probably why the cast described the film as bigger and darker than the first.
