Shanghai Disneyland is getting another big park expansion very soon, as the official Disney Parks blog has announced that a Zootopia-themed land is coming in the next few years. This would now be the second major expansion since the resort opened three years ago, after last year’s Toy Story Land. This new land will be based on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 2016 animated movie, which was a huge global hit and did particularly well in China, where it was the biggest animated film of all time. This will be the first land, or even attraction, based on Zootopia in any of the Disney theme parks.

The film’s main characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, will of course be heavily featured in this area, which will have all kinds of Zootopia-themed entertainment, merchandise, and food and beverage offerings. What we don’t know yet is what kind of attractions this Zootopia land will have, but it’s hard to imagine any land in a Disney theme park without at least one major ride to anchor the area. Construction is set to begin later this year, which means it probably won’t open until 2021 at the earliest.
So what kind of attractions could we expect to see in Zootopia Land? Well, first off, we hope the land is simply called “Zootopia” for brevity’s sake, but perhaps a “Zootopia Autopia,” where guests can drive around the different animal worlds we see in the film? A lot of the transportation systems seen in the movie would also lend themselves to rides of some sort. Here’s hoping that at least some details will be revealed at this year’s upcoming D23 Expo in Anaheim.
