The Life Engineered by JF Dubeau is an upcoming Inkshares sci-fi novel that put a different spin on the future of artificial intelligence. In many science fiction stories, AI robots are either slaves or aggressors, and often something to fear. In Dubreau’s short novel, the robots, called Chapek, are the future of humanity. Humans have gone extinct, but they’ve left their heritage in the Chapek. Unlike typical AI, Chapek experience and understand emotions. Almost like human minds in robot bodies….

The humans left a guide to utopia, but when a prominent figure is suddenly murdered, newly created Dagir, must discover the culprit before the peaceful race is thrown into utter chaos and repeats humanity’s mistakes.

The novel is a part of the Sword & Laser Collection. Sword & Laser is a sci-fi and fantasy themed book club, podcast, and former Geek & Sundry show started by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt. Dubeau’s novel placed in their first contest to have his book published via Inkshares. Inkshares is a not only a crowd-funded publishing source, but also a service that provides writers with editing and publishing support. The Life Engineered is currently in production, so the more preorders and public contributions it receives, the more copies Inkshares will publish. The contest winners will be distributed to independent bookstores, Amazon, Apple, and Barnes & Noble when they launch in March of 2016.

In the meantime, check out the video above to see some of Dubeau’s character designs.
