Earlier this month, World of Warcraft‘s new expansion, Battle for Azeroth, allowed the Alliance and the Horde to gain new allies in their ongoing conflict. But there are more forces in play that have their own agenda for Azeroth. Queen Azshara of the Naga has had ambitious plans to transform the world for centuries, and she’ll be making her return in Battle for Azeroth. In Blizzard’s new Warbringers animated short, Azahara’s transformation from a Highborne Nightelf into something truly monstrous takes place before our eyes. However, the darkness in Azahara’s heart existed long before her fall.
One of the reasons that Azshara is so dangerous is that she serves the Old God, N’Zoth, and she would gladly destroy both the Horde and the Alliance to seize control of their world. The Warbringers short flashes back to Azshara’s final day as a nightelf, as she desperately tried to save herself and her people from a cataclysm. But this was no selfless act, as demonstrated by Azshara’s willingness to give her people to N’Zoth in exchange for her own personal power and survival. She also insists upon being a queen instead of a slave, even though the title is largely meaningless when serving her new master.
Azhara’s origin had been previously revealed, but this short offers more insight into her fall and N’Zoth’s ultimate agenda. It also has some truly unsettling scenes of body horror as both Azshara and her people are remade in N’Zoth’s image. While Azshara hasn’t yet made her debut in Battle for Azeroth, she seems to be poised for a larger role going forward.
