During this afternoon’s Comic-Con@Home Panel, Amazon Studios revealed a long-awaited teaser for the upcoming series. And if the trailer is any indication, it looks like we’re in for a twisted, thrilling ride.
Inspired by the cult favorite UK series by Dennis Kelly, Utopia follows a group of fans who meet online and connect over their shared interest for a comic of the same name. What seems like a harmless obsession soon turns into something much bigger. The group of friends discover hidden meanings within “Utopia” that predict real world threats—and dangerous enemies. Their adventures lead them to a woman named Jessica Hyde, who is the main character in their comic book. But Jessica isn’t just a lead protagonist. She’s a real person…one who is keeping a few secrets of her own.
The original British series debuted in 2013. It ran for two seasons, becoming somewhat of a controversial hit with its dark humor and violent themes. Utopia has been in talks for a remake since 2014, when David Fincher attempted to adapt the series at HBO with a cast that included Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). In 2018, it was announced that best-selling author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn would adapt the series for Amazon, serving as the series’ showrunner.
