A24 has dropped the official trailer for Josh Safdie‘s intense sports dramedy following one man’s pursuit of greatness. In Marty Supreme, Timothee Chalamet picks up the paddle as up-and-coming table tennis player Marty Mauser, a young man willing to risk everything for his dreams. Check out the official trailer below, serving two and a half minutes of quasi-absurd, highly intense ping-pong action.
Set to a dramatic rendition of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” the trailer for Marty Supreme has Chalamet climbing the ranks from a down-on-his-luck hustler on the streets of New York to the “wizard of table tennis.” It’s one man’s tale of glory and grit, all centered around the unexpectedly high-stakes game of ping pong.
The sports film is a fictionalized retelling of real-life table tennis world champion Marty Reisman. Shot in typical Safdie style, the 1950s-set biopic wouldn’t be complete without a certain degree of intensity. The trailer sees Chalamet running through the streets of New York and defying all odds in his rise to fame.
The film follows the actor’s portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Swapping his guitar for a paddle, Chalamet is already in talks for Oscar nominations for his role as Marty. Marty Supreme shares the Oscar buzz and is considered to be a dark horse for the 98th Academy Awards. Joining Chalamet is Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler Okonma (Tyler, the Creator), Odessa A’zion, Shark Tank personality Kevin O’Leary, and Abel Ferrara. This marks Okonma’s feature film debut.

In a dramatic account of dreaming big and defying all expectations, Chalamet is sure to deliver a inspiring performance in Marty Supreme. If the trailer shows us anything, it’s that you should never let critics get in the way of your dreams. Well, that and that table tennis is a lot more intense than you would expect. Marty Supreme arrives in theaters on December 25.
