After more than 40 years, we all know Nintendo knows how to make incredible Super Mario Bros. sequels. At least, it does when it comes to video games. We’re about to find out if it can do the same with animated films. But the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has us confident the company will deliver a worthy follow-up to its box office smash, because it’s going big. So big it needs a whole lot of planets to tell a tale about Bowser seeking revenge.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie ran wild over box offices around the globe like a mustachioed plumber who ate magical Star Energy. The film took home more than $1.3 billion. Now Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment are going big with the sequel, with a story too big for just one world. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will see the Bowser family looking for vengeance in a film based on one of the most beloved video games ever. But a freed Bowser and his son aren’t the only ones who take center stage in this promo. It’s full of koopas, toads, princesses, and other characters from the games. And, you know, Mario and Luigi.
The biggest news, though, is that Donald Glover is voicing Yoshi. LOL perfect.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will see the return of stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black. In addition to Glover, the film will also introduce Brie Larson as Princess Rosaline, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
One way Nintendo and Illumination worked to make sure they recaptured the winning formula of the first film was to bring back the team behind it. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are both back to direct with another screenplay from Matthew Fogel. And just like with the original movie, composer Brian Tyler handled the score.
Will this sequel live up to the first film? It’s Nintendo. We assumed that was true even before we saw this trailer. But well find out for sure on April 1, 2026.
