The Powerpuff Girls are flying back to our screens, heading to their original home, Cartoon Network. To be clear, this is not a Powerpuff Girls revamp or reboot. We are not talking about the IYKYK defunct live-action show whose pilot was recently leakedOpens in a new tab. (But while we’re on the topic, that trailer was definitely a weird one, to say the least. I’ve always been of the opinion that the Powerpuff Girls cartoon was camp, but not in the way that the live-action trailer was.) But regardless of any live-action attempts, Cartoon Network will be rerunning episodes of the OG The Powerpuff Girls beginning April 12 with a new Saturday morning schedule, according to @CNschedulesOpens in a new tab. The lineup also includes Teen Titans Go! and Steven Universe. The Powerpuff Girls is reportedly on at 10:30 AM, following Steven Universe.

Cartoon Network is riding the wave of renewed Powerpuff Girls interest after its aestheticization in the cultural zeitgeist. From its Y2K style influence to popular music groups like New Jeans using the characters and theming for their musicOpens in a new tab, The Powerpuff Girls couldn’t be more relevant right now. And that’s why they’re returning to TV screens and on-air programming for the first time in years. It seems like Warner Bros. Animation is extra aware of the nostalgia for shows like The Powerpuff Girls thanks to Adult Swim’s “Checkered Past” programming block, which plays reruns of classic Cartoon Network shows from 5 PM to 7 PM.
Reruns are not necessarily the most exciting news in the world, but it’s no cause for lost hope yet. In 2022, there was news of a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Craig McCracken, the original creator of the shows, even signed on as a developer. However, no more information on this has been released since the initial announcement.
