Stretch your mind and think back to your earliest Disney memory. Since Disney is a part of many people’s childhoods, chances are you loved one of the animated movies or caught The Mickey Mouse Club way back when. The cast of Beauty and the Beast certainly did. I asked Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston), Josh Gad (LeFou), Audra McDonald (Garderobe), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Plumette), as well as director Bill Condon and composer Alan Menken to walk down memory lane and recall their special Disney moments.
Some remember first experiencing Disney through animated films. Dumbo made Stevens cry and his youthful self understand that crying didn’t have to be a sad experience. McDonald was freaked out by seeing Bambi at a young age — and no wonder! Have you rewatched that movie as an adult? It’s a little traumatizing.Movies weren’t the entry point for everyone. Gad cited The Mickey Mouse Club and reminisced about a song Jiminy Cricket performed on the show. He sang a bit of “I’m No Fool” and commented on how he likes the lessons the song teaches. Condon remembers being pulled into the world of Disney with The Wonderful World of Disney; the anthology series premiered films like The Parent Trap and Son of Flubber.
The live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast will arrive in theaters on March 17, and it will be someone’s first memory with Disney.
