Tenacious D Has a New Song All About ‘Video Games’

Ah, Tenacious D, how we’ve missed you. It’s been years since the band released an original song. But they’re back with a new tune, and you know what? “Video Games” was worth the wait. The song from Jack Black and Kyle Gass is an ode to video games and the stories games tell. The lyrics are excellent, yes, but the video for Tenacious D’s “ Video Games” rules. An animated journey through games like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2, “Video Games” is about embracing the art of games.

Given Black’s recent performance as Bowser in the wildly successful Super Mario Bros. Movie, this song is perfect. We get this song and Bowser’s power ballad about Princess Peach? Yep, we’re blessed.

In a statement about “Video Games,” Gass and Black shared:

It’s about growing up and leaving childish things behind…. But then realizing that video games are more than just mindless toys…. In fact, they can be a true expression of huge ideas that belong in the pantheon of great works of art! It’s about time someone defended the honor and integrity of this bold new horizon. Leave it to the greatest band in the world… Tenacious D!!!

You know what, Tenacious D? It needed to be said. Video games, like any stories, contain meaning and weight. Many games offer an escape, like the best fictional worlds do, but also, video games are so much more.
