In 2019, you'll be able to step out of our world and into the galaxy far, far away with Disney Parks' Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge expansions. I know 2019 isn't exactly around the corner, but Disney is offering up a different kind of immersive Star Wars experience for the upcoming holiday season with Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire. Star Wars. Disney. They had me at hello.
News of this unique galactic venture comes from StarWars.com. Secrets of the Empire from ILMxLAB and The Void will be opening at Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California and Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida in two new experience centers. It's been dubbed a "social, and multi-sensory experience, including interaction with friends, fans, and Star Wars characters." They're calling it hyper-reality, which they say is a combination of virtual reality, advanced tech, and illusions.
The presence of the Empire and an Imperial security droid like K-2SO in concept art place the story in the original trilogy era. While no specific details about story or destinations have been released, that art does show Mustafar. Ooh. Maybe it's in the Star Wars Rebels timeline? Since the experience will include touching senses beyond sight, including what guests hear, touch, and smell as they become an active part of the story, it's suited to wrap visitors in iconic locations from the Star Wars universe.
The Void has previously done a hyper reality experience for Ghostbusters. Watch the below video to see what they did for Ghostbusters and imagine that kind of detail applied to Star Wars.
Will you be transporting yourself to check out Secrets of the Empire? Head to the comments and tell us your hopes for the hyper reality experience.
