These Chewbacca Costumes Are What Happens When You Don’t Let the Wookiee Win

With Solo: A Star Wars Story ready to launch into theaters on May 25, it’s time for merchandise to soar onto shelves. Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t held back with products for the Star Wars films they’ve released so far, and that’s not changing for Solo. Toys from Funko Pop! figures to Hot Wheels, a Play-Doh Chewbacca, a book and comic–that’s just a sampling of what you’ll be able to fill your shelves with in the coming weeks. Some of the products make sense–give me 3.75 inch action figures for days–but others are…out there. Yeah, let’s go with that.

Exhibit A: Chewbacca costumes from Rubies (via StarWars.com):

What. Why. How. Where is Boba Fett and can he please disintegrate these?

I guess the different styles mean your entire family can dress like Chewbacca, but just because you can, should you? The pup-sized version of the costume is darn adorable and fitting since a dog was the inspiration for the character. But the plastic mask, the painted on hair, and the randomly placed fur on the other costumes…I just don’t know.

And in images we’ve seen of Chewie in the Solo trailers, he’s wearing a double bandolier. These costumes don’t look so much Solo as they do A New Hope. Yes, I just pushed my glasses up my nose.

What do you think? Am I overreacting to these costumes? Do you want to buy a sparkly Wookiee skirt for everyone you know? Punch it towards the comments and let us know–no judgment, I promise.
