Sonic the Hedgehog is truly the film series of our pandemic life. For many of us, the first film was the last one we saw in theaters before everything changed. Now, we are still in the midst of COVID, but our fave blue speedster is back again, with another film coming on April 8. ( And we are getting a third one too!) If that feels super close, it’s because it truly is right around the corner. And we know that to be true because the Paramount Pictures marketing lords gave us a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 final trailer. We appreciate this glorious slice of joy.
In the clip, Maddie and Tom are at Rachel’s wedding. It only takes a matter of seconds before Rachel has yet another reason to dislike Tom. His cell phone rings, and it is Sonic in need of his help. Tom uses the ring to bring Sonic and our good friend Tails through to sunny Hawaii to the wedding guests’ surprise and probably chagrin. Sonic the Hedgehog hits them with bad news: Robotnik is back. And this is true. Not only is he back, but he has, as one fellow calls it, a “space porcupine” with him.
We know this dangerous guy as Knuckles ( voiced by Idris Elba, no less), who wants to destroy humanity, of course. Sonic predictably faces his situation without any sort of plan or finesse because he is literally chaos energy. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 final trailer is everything we could ask for. There are jokes, explosions, a snowboarding hedgehog, Tails, and an overabundance of drama. Give this film to us as soon as possible. Please.
Thankfully we are only a couple of weeks away from its glory. Some people may still not be ready to hit theaters to see the sequel to Sonic’s epic tale. But those who are will be in for a delightful treat that delivers all the ‘90s nostalgia with a modern story.
