As we all know, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was undoubtedly one of the best films of 2025. Everything about it from its excellent cast to the film’s cinematography and script was a pure masterpiece. So, it is not shocking that, despite being largely categorized as a horror film, Sinners is getting a lot of awards nominations. And while I personally feel like the Golden Globes and other awards ceremonies have not given Sinners its fair shake, I am still keeping hope alive for the Oscars. Nominations are out, and Sinners has broken the record for the most Oscar nominations of all-time with a whopping sixteen. We will see how the film fairs at the 98th Academy Awards. It is quite exciting to see Michael B. Jordan snag his first Oscar nomination ever for his leading dual role as Smoke and Stack.
Here are all the Oscar categories that Sinners scored nominations for:
*Best Picture – Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ryan Coogler
*Best Director – Ryan Coogler
*Best Original Screenplay – Ryan Coogler
*Best Actor in a Leading Role – Michael B. Jordan
*Best Actor in a Supporting Role – Delroy Lindo
*Best Actress in a Supporting Role – Wunmi Mosaku
*Best Makeup and Hairstyling
*Best Original Score
*Best Casting

Make no mistake. This film is squarely about the Black Southern American experience during a very fraught period and it tackles racism head on. It also has a lot of vampires in it, so it is a genre offering. So I get the feeling that the Oscars may try to also play around and not give Sinners what it richly deserves in the major categories, including Best Director and Best Actor.
It is, in fact, a better film than some of its competitors, including One Battle After Another. But I digress. We will see which categories will give Sinners the Oscar when the Academy Awards airs on March 15.
