Guillermo Del Toro is one of the key names in horror and fantasy filmmaking, so his connection to the adaptation of the supremely popular Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series has long been a massive source of excitement for fans. Now, a new trailer for the film, from Troll Hunter director André Øvredal, showcases how the two directors have come together to bring Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammell’s iconic short stories to life.

The forthcoming film focuses on a group of teens who find a mysterious book that writes stories specific to the fears of its victims. From the trailer, we see that those stories animate and begin to haunt the young heroes. The first full look at the film showcases the power of stories and the folkloric nature of the yarns that feature in the classic kids’ books.
The big draw here though is the fact that fans get to see terrifying tales including “Harold,” “Big Toe,” “The Attic,” “The Cat’s Paw,” “The Pale Woman,” “The Red Spot,” and “The Jangly Man.” It looks very very spooky for a kids movie and it’ll be interesting to see how the Amblin-esque mix of horror and adventure will gel when the film drops on August 9. Until then, we’ll be scaring ourselves silly and trying to find every Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark easter egg.
