Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammell’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark have been haunting our collective dreams since they first hit shelves in the ’80s and ’90s. That’s why we’ve been exceptionally stoked for André Øvredal’s film version, which is being produced by none other than Guillermo del Toro. It’s all but guaranteed to be a hauntingly good time.
Now, thanks to the Super Bowl, we have our first look at the film in the form of FOUR mini teaser trailers.
“Who took my big to-o-o-o-o-e?”

In the first, we see a long-limbed figure moving through a hallway late at night, asking, “Who took my big to-o-o-o-o-e?” This means that Scary Stories film is adapting “The Big Toe,” which is the first story in the first book in the series. “The Big Toe” is itself an adaptation of an American folktale about a young boy who finds a severed toe in his garden and is stalked by its dead owner. The creature design here looks great!
Turn out the lights and prepare for terror… the Jangly Man is coming for you.

The second trailer is even more intriguing, because it features an original character, the Jangly Man, who doesn’t appear in any of the Scary Stories books. He looks like some kind of Slenderman figure and we are terrified!
“What is that red spot on my cheek?” Mother said, “It will go away. Just don’t scratch it.”

Spider-cheek, spider-cheek, does exactly what you’d fear a spider-cheek does.
And here’s one more, which is a real dream…
She leaned over the bed and whispered, “This is an evil place. Flee while you can.”

We can’t wait to see what other horrors await us when Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark hits theaters on August 9. Here’s the new official synopsis:
“It’s l968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.”
