Cassian Andor and K-2SO are loyal pals in Rogue One. K-2SO’s blunt, straightforward attitude plays so well off Cassian’s hard edges. And though Kaytoo has plenty of sass (all the sass, really) and points out the flaws and/or poor odds of a situation, at the end of the day, he listens to Cassian. “The captain said I had to” is one of the most memorable lines of the film.
But how did Cassian and Kaytoo become so close? All relationships have a beginning, and we’ll learn about how the rebel and the Imperial droid met in a new comic. StarWars.com shared the news about the upcoming Marvel release: Marvel. Star Wars: Rogue One — Cassian & K-2SO Special #1 by writer Duane Swierczynski and artist Fernando Blanco. Coming out in August, the story will go into the past and detail Cassian and K-2SO’s history.

Though it’s labeled as the first issue, this tale is a 40 page one shot story, not a miniseries or an ongoing title. Since that’s about double the size of an average comic, they have room to play. It sounds like K-2SO has already been reprogrammed by the time Cassian runs into him, and if that’s the case, I can’t wait to see their first encounter. I can imagine Cassian seeing K-2SO as a potentially valuable resource, so maybe Kaytoo is the subject of a mission first?
And since this story is numbered, I’m guessing and hoping we’ll see future one-shots in a series of specials–maybe all centered on Rogue One characters. I’d be perfectly fine with that.
What sort of meet-cute would you pen for Cassian and K-2SO? If you have fanfic, share it in the comments.
