RICK AND MORTY Becomes BUSHWORLD ADVENTURES For April Fool’s Day

Last year, Adult SwimOpens in a new tab delivered one of its greatest April Fool’s DayOpens in a new tab pranks to date by premiering the first episode of Rick and MortyOpens in a new tab season 3 without any advance warning. Given the glacial pace of the fourth season – which has yet to be officially orderedOpens in a new tab – few fans expected to see any sign of Rick and Morty this year. However, Adult Swim did have a Rick and Morty surprise this year, and it wasn’t anything we could have predicted.Instead of the fourth season premiere, Adult Swim debuted a short called Bushworld Adventures, which re-imagined Rick and Morty in an alternate universe in which their show takes place in Australia. It’s a far less fantastical take on the characters, which makes for some very uncomfortable moments when Rick holds a “portal” gun to Morty’s head. Especially since it looks just like a real gun.

Opens in a new tabThis short was written and directed by Michael Cusack, and to put it charitably, this was a very strange take on the source material. Just as Justin RoilandOpens in a new tab drew upon Back to the FutureOpens in a new tab‘s Marty McFly and Doc Brown, Bushworld Adventures puts Rick and Morty into even darker territory by portraying their relationship with a more overt abuse angle. Although Roiland’s early shorts also had jokes about fellatio. It’s hard to imagine many Rick and Morty fans being particularly pleased by this extended riff. If Roiland and Dan HarmonOpens in a new tab had been directly involved, then perhaps we would have had a more favorable response as well.
