PlayStation Announced Big Price Increases for PS5

If you were planning to buy a PS5, you might want to do it this weekend. Actually, you’ll definitely want to do it this week. If you wait much longer, you’ll be paying a whole lot more. Sony has announced that starting next week it is raising the price on its signature PlayStation products and services. The increase is in response to :looks around: everything.

Sony says (in news we first heard about at Variety) it is increasing the recommended retail prices for its PS5 consoles. The new higher prices will start in just a few days, on April 2, 2026. In its release, the company said the across-the-board uptick is due to “pressures in the global economic landscape.” Sony said the new costs are the only way to guarantee it can “continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

Innovation, sure. Plus, you know, fuel costs a lot more these days. We bet the fuel thing doesn’t help. We know it’s hurting us.

The reasons for the hikes, legitimate though they may be, will be of little comfort to consumers. These increases are for an already expensive game console. And they are not exactly minor. The PS5 already retails in the U.S. for $550. It’s increasing by $100. The Pro is jumping $150. These are the new prices for the four listed regions:

  • U.S.
    –PS5 – $649.99
    –PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
    –PS5 Pro – $899.99
  • U.K.
    –PS5 – £569.99
    –PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
    –PS5 Pro – £789.99
  • Europe
    –PS5 – €649.99
    –PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99
    –PS5 Pro – €899.99
  • Japan
    –PS5 – ¥97,980
    –PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980
    –PS5 Pro – ¥137,980

The cost for the PlayStation Portal remote player is also going up. The new prices for that service will be:

  • U.S. – $249.99
  • U.K. – £219.99
  • Europe – €249.99
  • Japan – ¥39,980

We’re sure if global “pressures” subside, these prices will return to their previous amounts.

Yes, actually, we do also believe the Easter Bunny is real, why do you ask? In fact, We’re hoping he’ll bring us a new PS5 this year since we’re not sure we’ll be able to afford one in a week.
