There are some actor-director pairs that go together like fish and water. John Ford and John Wayne. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. The Coen Brothers and John Goodman. And now, another relationship is solidified: Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray.
The two previously worked together on Coppola’s Lost in Translation, a collaboration that won her an Oscar and earned him a nomination. Now, the pair is back together for the Apple Original Films/A24 feature On the Rocks. Rashida Jones co-stars as Murray’s daughter in the comedy. The first trailer for the film is here–and it looks a little off-book for Coppola.
Not that that’s a bad thing! It’s just rare to see a straightforward comedy from the writer/director, although we suppose Lost in Translation fell into that camp. Here, Murray stars as Felix, a wealthy art dealer, with Jones as his daughter Laura. The two suspect Laura’s husband (Marlon Wayans) might be having an affair, so they team up to investigate together. The film is set in New York City, so we expect the city will serve as an important character, too.
“I wanted to do something that was a little bit lighter and more playful with a lot of heart and sincerity,” Coppola told Entertainment Weekly in a recent exclusive about the film. She also described On the Rocks as an “odd couple, buddy movie.”

It’s been 16 years since Lost in Translation came out. We’re hoping On the Rocks means that more Coppola and Murray collaborations are on the horizon. But if not, we’ll savor this reunion. We’re also stoked to see Rashida Jones in the mix. The talented actress seems like she’ll fit right in with Murray’s comedy, and we can’ t wait to see them act opposite one another.
