Rom-com fans do not fret in today’s age of never-ending horror series and franchise remakes. We have been resuscitated from the dead by, of all things, a mayonnaise commercial. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal appear in a Super Bowl commercial along with an unexpected new-age rom-com guest. The stars of the ’80s genre-defining romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally, recreated their iconic diner scene from the film with a Hellmann’s twist, and you can watch the Super Bowl ad below.
Just like the scene in the movie, Harry and Sally are in Katz’s Delicatessen enjoying a meal when Sally begins to drive Harry crazy. However, instead of Sally faking an orgasm to prove to Harry that it is fakable, she appears to actually have one due to the power of Hellmann’s mayonnaise on her sandwich.
Hellmann’s added a special guest into the mix, as if that was not enough nostalgia! Sydney Sweeney, star of the 2023 rom-com Anyone but You, makes a special appearance reprising the legendary line, “I’ll have what she’s having.” I have to say, after seeing that performance, I would have to ask the same.
Sweeney was excited to work with familiar rom-com faces Crystal and Ryan, saying, “working with legends like Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal on this nostalgic and hilarious ad was such an honor. When Harry Met Sally is a rom-com classic, and adding Hellmann’s to the scene was a perfect match, so it was an easy yes for this project. I can’t wait for everyone to see it during the Big Game!”
You can watch the original scene below to refresh your memory of the film.
The actors themselves were very excited for fans of When Harry Met Sally to see them recreate the scene. “Reuniting with Billy and stepping back into Sally’s shoes was a joy,” said Meg Ryan. “I’m hoping it’ll be fun for fans to revisit this scene with its (wink, wink) new star, Hellmann’s mayo.”
The 30-second Hellmann’s Super Bowl spot couldn’t come at a better time as it celebrates the film’s 35th anniversary. Other than the setting and lines, the ad also has Easter eggs that fans of the movie will notice. For example, Crystal’s white cable knit sweater he wore in the film.
“The opportunity to return to Katz’s Deli with Meg was a no brainer,” said Billy Crystal. “Thanks to Hellmann’s, who came up with the concept and wrote a really funny spot, we’re bringing some laughs and nostalgia and helping When Harry Met Sally celebrate its 35th Anniversary during the Big Game this year.”
Rom-com fans will be able to head to the Katz’s Delicatessen website from now till February 9 to get the “What She’s Having” sandwich package. The kit costs $120, can feed four to six people, and features instructions on how to make Sally’s mind-blowing sandwich.
I’ll get on ordering this so I can snack while rewatching this film for the thousandth time. Meg Ryan, you are an icon. You are the moment.
