Age of Empires II was released almost two decades ago.
But that doesn’t mean people aren’t interested in it anymore. A recently released fan-made Lord of the Rings mod has brought new life to this classic game by importing characters, races, and locations from J.R.R Tolkien’s epic saga. It’s been a passion project for six years, and now a near-final build is available.
Via Kotaku, the mod is called Tales of Middle-Earth; it features 18 realms from Tolkien’s novels as well as multiple factions, including the Men of the West, the Elves, the Rohirrim, Southrons, and the Easterlings. But if your alignment is more with Sauron, you can take control of his forces in Mordor and Angmar, home of the fearsome Witch-king of the Nazgûl.
It should be noted the Tales of Middle-Earth mod isn’t finished yet, but it is fully playable. It also goes beyond the scope of the novels by chronicling events from the Fall of Beleriand to the War of the Ring. It will allow players the chance to recreate many of the epic battles from both the books and the films. The mod even includes the Rangers of the North as well as the giant Mûmakil/Oliphaunts. This creation has so much depth it could almost be an official release.
