A beloved storyline from the world of Dungeons & Dragons is coming to live-action as a new Netflix series. According to a report in Deadline, Shawn Levy, producer of Stranger Things and director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is spearheading a new series for the streamer, Forgotten Realms. Also part of the creative team as showrunner is Drew Crevello, along with Hasbro Entertainment. A Dungeons & Dragons series was in development for Paramount+ but ultimately never got off the ground. Forgotten Realms is based on one of the most popular campaign settings in all of D&D history. The series won’t be related to the recent film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Forgotten Realms gained much of its popularity thanks to the many licensed novels by authors such as R. A. Salvatore, which began to spring up in the late ’80s and early ’90s. In addition, several popular video games take place under the Forgotten Realms banner, including Pool of Radiance, Eye of the Beholder, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights. Perhaps the most well-known is the extremely popular Baldur’s Gate series. Given how much of a spotlight Stanger Things put on the world of Dungeons & Dragons, it makes sense that the series would wind up with some of the same creatives in charge, and also on Netflix.
The titular Forgotten Realms is actually the fantasy continent of Faerûn, the western part of which the creators modeled on Europe and Asia. Humans, dwarves, elves, goblins, and orcs all rule the many kingdoms that comprise the Forgotten Realms . And, of course, there are all other manner of strange creatures. The entire concept of Forgotten Realms came from game designer Ed Greenwood, based on stories he developed as a child. There is no word yet as to when Forgotten Realms arrives on Netflix. But don’t expect it before 2026 at the earliest.
