Holy…cow.
Square Enix revealed a new trailer for Kinsglaive Final Fantasy XV at San Diego Comic Con. Yes, that sounds like a mouthful, but when it comes to Final Fantasy in the 21st century, what doesn’t? Kingsglaive was announced at the “Uncovered: Final Fantasy” event back in March along with a slew of surprise editions arriving alongside Final Fantasy XV. It will be the first feature-length, CG-animated film since Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children in 2005. Remember how pretty Advent Children was? That was 11 years ago. So what’s Square Enix’s level of animation now? Watch:
Hang on….need to breathe for a moment…
Okay! One of Final Fantasy‘s pitfalls has always been the overly-complicated plots, but this one actually looks pretty coherent. There’s a crystal that’s the source of power, two factions started fighting over that power, the underdogs need to free themselves from the evil Empire, and finally some stunningly beautiful animated battle scenes to resolve the conflict. I’m down with that. The only thing that concerns me is that there is a “rescue the princess” element that I hope isn’t the entirety of the plot. The story is reported to lead into the Final Fantasy XV game, but it looks like it should actually work fine as a standalone film. The English dub stars Game of Thrones’ Sean Bean (Ned Stark) and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) as well as Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman). Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children‘s Takeshi Nozue directed this piece as well.
Here’s where things get even better. The film will be released in select North American theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington DC, Houston, Seattle, Orlando, El Paso, and more on August 19. If it’s not playing in a theater near you, you won’t have to wait much longer to see it. Kingsglaive will be available for digital download on August 30, and on Blu-ray and DVD on October 4. for more information, go to the official Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV website.
Final Fantasy XV launches on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 30.
