Kevin Williamson Says He Won’t Direct Nor Write SCREAM 8

Shortly after Scream 7 hit theaters, there was already news about Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell planning for Scream 8. That wasn’t shocking to anyone considering the franchise’s current and increasing popularity with a new generation of slasher fans. But it seems that Williamson doesn’t want to sit in the director’s chair for this next sequel. In an interview with the popular Scream fansite Hello Sidney, Kevin Williamson said that he does not want to write nor direct Scream 8. This is interesting considering he did both for Scream 7, and is known for launching this franchise.

And, with Scream 7 finding commercial success, you’d think he would want to take a stab at leading the next film. “I want to direct another film that I had written that is just waiting for me to find the time to direct,” said Williamson when asked about Scream 8. “And right now, I’m working on a couple TV shows that I’m really excited about. So maybe I’ll direct one of those — who knows? For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again.”

So yes, he’s been brainstorming with Neve Campbell but he doesn’t plan to be involved in an official creative position. He went on to tell Hello Sidney that he is excited to see what another storyteller can come up with next. For those who have seen the film, the ending certainly leaves some open threads that can be tugged for Sidney and the other survivors. Should they be tugged? Probably not. I love the Scream franchise but I think it is okay to let it rest once again.

Williamson did confirm that Scream 8 has not gotten the greenlight from the studio quite yet. But we are sure that confirmation will happen soon because, well, studios like making monies.
