J.J. Abrams himself made his way to Las Vegas for CinemaCon to chat briefly about his mysterious new sci-fi film The Great Beyond, which stars Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega. He called it a love story with some genre bending elements before unveiling the first footage for The Great Beyond. And, while it doesn’t give away plot details, it does spark a ton of intrigue.
It begins with a quote from H.G. Wells, which says “There is, though I do not know how there is or how it may be, another world out of sight and sound.” Then, there’s brief interaction between Ortega and Powell’s characters, along with a glimpse of Samuel L. Jackson. A voiceover from Ortega says “People like us, I think we’re looking for something — something pure, something we can’t find here.”
There are flashes of light, the opening of the ground, and Powell’s character seemingly on the run. Interesting. Abrams said he wanted to tell “original stories” and we are totally into whatever is happening with this film. The Great Beyond hits theaters on November 13.
